How are lessons structured?
Before a crew member can undertake a passage with Celtic Song, they are required to take five classes to build a foundation for more advanced cruising knowledge: basics, docking, person overboard, anchoring, and reefing. As a crew member and trainee, you are expected to make an effort in learning the procedures, safety precautions, and methods for each of the lessons taught.
Crew are expected to be involved regularly in the program, participating at least six times for every three months and be willing to teach new crew.
Learn to teach
We measure our own abilities and learning in our skills tracker, where we have our names, the skill, and the date in which we are ready to teach the skill to others. Skills to be learned are listed at the beginning of the materials for each lesson.
All crew participate in all classes repeatedly as we continue to strengthen our understanding of these foundations, ultimately equipping more and more crew to lead and teach the classes. As our crew grows increasingly experienced, we expect them to teach and instruct the next generation of blue-water cruisers aboard Celtic Song and beyond.
