How do I join?

what to know before applying

Requirements

In order to join the Celtic Song crew, you need not be an expert or seasoned sailor. However, you should have a strong understanding of sailing principals, and you should have logged at least 25 hours on the water.

We recommend taking sailing classes from ASA or US Sailing to build foundations, if needed (and all crew should complete this ASA 101 Practice Test before their first class, in order to gain an assessment of current skill level).

Most importantly, crew should have:
  • Sailing ability, seamanship and the ability to learn.
  • Temperament, ability, and willingness to get along with others.
  • An attitude of giving back and assisting in training new crew members.

Expectations aboard celtic song

We expect initiative and authenticity from our crew.
  • Crew should take initiative with signing up for lessons, confirming attendance, and doing lesson prep before each day sail.
  • Crew should admit when they do not know something (general seamanship, standard operating, how to do tasks delegated to them). We do this to ensure the safety of the crew and the vessel whenever on land or at sea.
  • Crew should be ready and willing to have their knowledge tested at any time while on the Celtic Song, in efforts to better internalize and practice our skills.
  • Crew should be willing to adopt new procedures, technology, and methods that improve the safety of the vessel, improve its operating efficiency, and/or improve the well-being of the crew.
  • Crew should be willing to be critiqued in an effort to improve our own abilities.

a Final Thought...

Every crew member—trainees, team leaders, and captain alike—started out (and remains) a student. As instructors, we will do our best to present sailing concepts, ideas, and procedures so that you, the student may learn them and practice them. However, it is not the responsibility of the teacher to have the student actually learn and retain the information. That is the student's duty to the teacher.

Crew are expected to take the time to study and review what they are taught.
We ask that you embrace the agency you have as a student to direct and perfect what you learn!

Most importantly, stay safe and have fun.
